Occupation-Liberation: Two irreconcilable concepts, forever at war with each other. Two concepts about which we must take a clear stance, without ambiguity. These two concepts always come at a high cost, especially in human lives, but also highlight the reserves of endurance and the struggle of humanity when it thirsts for freedom and justice.
On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Athens from the German occupation forces, we remember the two brotherly people whose homelands are still under occupation. Cyprus for 50 years and Palestine for 76, share a similar fate: military occupation, violent territorial division, human rights violations, mass settlement, cultural destruction, and property usurpation. Even worse, they share the condemnation of the silence and forgetfulness surrounding the events that led to the invasion and everything that followed. In the year 2024, the normalization of military occupation in both countries has become a new reality.
Furthermore, we must never forget the role of the British Empire, which, while celebrating alongside the Greeks as a "liberating force" during the liberation of Athens, in Cyprus and Palestine laid the foundations and created the conditions for its colonies to be conquered by foreign powers.
